“Hurricana: Thoroughbred Dynasty, Amsterdam Landmark”
During the period 1903 to 1907, General Stephen Sanford showcased his prized thoroughbreds which had been born, raised and trained on the grounds of Hurricana. On the Saturday closest to the 4th of July, just prior to walking his horses to Saratoga for the summer meet, the General hosted the Matinee Races for the enjoyment of the citizens of Amsterdam and the surrounding area. The events were attended by some 15,000 area residents.
The races were chronicled by noted area photographer George Wheaton of nearby Broadalbin, NY. Five of the most popular post card photos have been enhanced and enlarged to 18” X 24” (total dimensions, including a 3” white perimeter border) suitable for framing. The prints are mounted on 1/4” foam board and laminated for appearance and durability.
This run is limited to 100 prints of each photo.
Each photo is numbered, e.g. 5/100
